Check out chicagotribune.com for pics and info. You can see this really well from the Montrose brown line stop. Apparently a water main broke last night and caued a sink hole, making the road and sidewalk collapse no Montrose, just east of Wolcott.
Montrose was closed between Ravenswood and Wolcott this morning when I passed by, and Wolcott was closed from Sunnyside to Montrose. -Chip

And when we say COLLAPSE we really mean it.
The road is sunk so far down that there are a couple cars that fell in that are barely peeking up above the top of the hole. This is like a 5 or 6 foot deep sink hole. it's insane. Montrose from Ashland - Western will be closed for a week while they clean it up.

I'm posting from inside the sinkhole right now. I was standing on the street when it happened. Someone please send a help crew and tell them that little Stevie Gadlin is stuck under the street.

I watched the video on the Tribune.com and was VERY surprised to see my friend, Tom Laporte, speaking to the news camera on behalf of the Water Company. Tom's a really great guy. He organized the Burning Man Audio Commercials that we all taped a while back. And he also organizes the Halsted Street Halloween Parade, each year. It was very cool seeing him pop up in that little news segment.
This city ain't that big. Cheers, COB

this is going down a block from my house. it's like The Fugitive (also filmed in chicago), but real... and sans one-armed man. where's tommy lee?
funny thing though, since i don't have tv really, i didn't know about it at all until my cousins emailed me this morning asking if i was okay. i'm like, what's going on? i step out my front door into a full-on disaster area. LOL. |

I work at the Bux at montrose and wolcott and it was commandeered and turned into the command center for the police/water dept./comEd/disaster squad/cta/etc. it was crazy/interesting as they kept having briefings in the cafe within earshot... basically the effort is delayed because comEd can't find the ancient switches to cut the electricity to make it safe to work in the abyss... we were giving free brewed coffee and hot brewed tea to all the uniformed workers/officials w/ badges involved in the effort... it was dead/but busy as hell serving the workers... something to tell my (inevitable) cats about some day...
